Devon Dumplings v Frogs

Tuesday 31 August 2021 at Exeter County

DD: 135 AO Frogs: 137-7

The Dumplings were beaten in the last fixture of the season in a low-scoring affair between two strong sides at the County Ground. The sky was overcast but without any rain in it.

Sam Ewen won the toss and elected to bat on a firm but used pitch which was showing some wear. The Frogs bowled with movement, pace and accuracy throughout and responded to the Dumplings’ free scoring with consistent wickets. Only James Horler, Todd Wilcox and Sam Ewen managed 20 runs or more. Wilcox’s dismissal was key, and came in peculiar fashion; he hit a slower ball high in the air, and when the catch was dropped, it rebounded straight onto the stumps with Wilcox out of his ground.

The Frogs’ innings started badly, with captain Andy Carson being removed first ball by Tom Fogerty. With some assistance from the pitch, Wilcox and the Fogerty brothers started well, and the game was in the balance at 50-5. However, a strong partnership brought the Frogs a long way close to the modest total, with 135 proving not enough on the day.               SE
