Devon Dumplings v Paignton CC

Wednesday 20 July 2022 at Paignton

DD 90 ao Paignton 91-5

After the recent scorching temperatures, it was a relief to have a fresh sea breeze. This was probably the first match between the Clubs. Dumplings arrived with nine, Paignton had 10 and generously loaned a fielder.

Dumplings’ captain Conrad Sutcliffe won the toss and elected to bat. Two young debutants Eddie Smout-Cooper and Elliot Hamilton were presented with their Peter Spencer Bequest Dumplings' caps. Tristan Ebersohn, the Chudleigh overseas, was presented with his cap sponsored by Peter Jolliffe.

Smout-Cooper and Hamilton had opened the batting when disaster struck on the third ball. A lovely drive from Hamilton looked to be heading for the boundary, only to pull up short. With quick thinking by Jason Woodcook the return was on its way with the two batsman in the middle of the wicket admiring the assumed boundary. Smout-Cooper failed to make his ground. Hamilton could only hold his head in his hands in disbelief. He did make some amends scoring 22 before he was LBW in Connor Ashworth’s first over. Ashworth also had Aditya More caught behind in the same over and the Dumplings had slumped to 47 for 5. Ebersohn and Jonty Walliker then enjoyed a useful partnership of 39 before Ebersohn became Ashworth’s third victim. The innings petered out and Dumplings finished all out for 90 runs off just 25.5 overs.

Lunch of the self-catering variety was then taken. With such a small total to get, Divyaansh Saxena batted with sprightly abandon, the score racing on to 30 off the first two overs, all runs scored by Saxena. However in the following over, after two more boundaries, he was caught for 38 off just 16 balls with seven 4s and one 6.

The next two batsmen failed to score, and Aditya More, bowling tidily, took two wickets. But with Paignton‘s wicket-keeper Ollie Woodcock and captain Harry Ward regularly finding the boundary, within 12 overs Paignton had reached 91 for 5 and had won by 4 wickets

An unusually short day for a game of declaration cricket.
