Devon Dumplings v Mount Kelly
DD 200. Mount Kelly 132. DD won by 68 runs
After a gentlemen’s toss the Dumplings were put in to bat on a somewhat spicy track, where they made a steady start, with Harry Everett and Ollie Allsop opening. Allsop looked as rusty as an old barn-door finding a field with more holes in it than a Swiss cheese.
After the loss of Everett, came a good old-fashioned Dumplings' collapse with batsmen 3 to 6 not troubling the scorers a great deal. Up stepped the tall looming figure of Jonty Walliker, which seems to have intimidated the schoolboys. He mainly faced nothing but pies which he duly sent to the ropes for a much needed 45. With a few lusty blows from Westy, they saw Dumplings to a respectable 200 all out in relatively tricky conditions.
A good spell from Harry Gribble and Walliker saw Mount Kelly at 17-2 early on. A good partnership followed, partly due to some mediocre stuff from Dan Fogerty - seemingly unable to bowl to his captain’s plan - which saw the game nicely balanced at 76-2. It was at this point a few questions were being asked about the number of glasses of wine consumed alongside a beautiful spread put on by the School. It was only when the spin twins Goldsby-West and Everett took either end that the tide turned in favour of the visitors. Each took three leaving the hosts 110-8. It remained only for some expert at-the-death bowling from James Ewen to separate the men from the boys. A convincing 68 run win, played in great spirit, Mount Kelly once again proving they are fine hosts on the Dumplings calendar and a pleasure to spend the day with them again.
Young debutant Jake Williams was presented with his Dumplings cap ahead of the match.
