Devon Dumplings v Wye Rustics
DD 239 for 5 dec. Wye Rustics 182. DD won by 57 runs
After rain overnight and showers forecast for the day, fingers were crossed that we would get a game in, and we did, even enjoying some sunshine at the end. Three young debutants were presented with their Dumplings caps; Alex Tipper, Alex Jarman and Josh Paget.
Having won the toss, Wye Rustics put us in and we started sedately, building a platform. It wasn’t until their fifth bowler Jack Griffiths was used that the opening partnership was broken when George Daldorph was bowled for 45, with the score on 67. Samuel Cuconits was joined by Jack Geraghty and both then accelerated and added 105 runs for the second wicket before Cuconits was caught behind for 73. Geraghty continued steadily until captain Graham White advised him at drinks he needed to speed up if he wanted to get a century before the declaration. Three sixes soon followed and with his score on 101, White declared with the score at 239 for 5.
Wye Rustics captain Robert Craze opened the batting but soon found himself back in the pavilion with the score on 11 having been caught behind off the bowling of Daldorph. Harrison Gribble then bowled a long spell of 11 overs with his shortened run-up during which he claimed three wickets. Jarman bowled in tandem with Gribble and finished his spell with a double wicket maiden which left the tourists on 105 for 6. Five overs into the last hour, the match was still very much up for grabs but White turned to Geraghty who had Sam Thain caught behind having put on a rapid 31 including 3 consecutive sixes. This gave Dumplings a chance with the score on 179 for 7. Geraghty’s next over finished off the game by his taking a hat trick. His first victim was Jack Upton, who had top scored with 51, then a caught and bowled and an LBW to finish and the Dumplings had won. Daldorph had suffered an injury and his place on the field was taken by his sister Imogen, who fielded very well and displayed a good arm. We hope to see her playing a full game for the Dumplings before too long.
