Devon Dumplings v W Buckland School
DD: 207-9 W Buckland 120-7 Match Drawn
The sun was shining, finally, a beautiful day as Dumplings won the toss and chose to bat
first (two players were missing!) The pitch looked decent and the outfield quick, but the wet March and April meant that all was not as it seemed. The pitch wasn’t so bad, just low and slow, as most have been this season so far.
The openers mastered the conditions and we got to lunch at 130-1, Lions’ captain Jack Ford
having made 48, and Roshan Lakmal 75*. Some very defensive field settings and the slowness
of the pitch and outfield had made for some turgid periods of play at times, but Roshan, on his
debut, made his way with no fuss to 100 before retiring, and Teriq Worrell added 23. No other
batter got more than eight as we declared at 3.15pm on 207-9 off 47 overs.
The School never really made a go of the chase but there were tidy innings from Luke Stapleton
and Noah Tovell. Martin Stewart’s first spell of seven overs was almost unplayable, and Giles
Bashford bowled 8 overs and took 1-13. There were two wickets each for Jack Ford and
Lakmal, who bowled in tandem at the end of the innings to try to winkle out the wickets for a
win. West Buckland, having been 111-3, lost four wickets for 5 runs but managed to hang on to
finish on 120-7. Another few overs might have been interesting.
Two caps were awarded during the game, courtesy of the Peter Spencer bequest: Damon Berry making his debut, and Teriq Worrell playing his third game.
