Devon Dumplings v Exeter University

Thursday 23 May 2024 at University Sports

University 178-8dec DD 121ao University won by 57 runs

At the fourth attempt in two years, we finally managed to play Exeter University. With no
availability from the Exeter area we relied on players mainly from the north of the county plus
five overseas players.
Captain Ian Hayter won the toss and elected to field. A good start with tidy bowling from Rob Lambert and Teriq Worrell meant that after 12 overs they had reduced the University to 17
for 3. This brought Will Pike to the crease. He changed their innings around, putting on 64 for
the 4th wicket before he was dismissed by the family Keates, son Jim taking a catch off his
father Oliver’s bowling. Will had scored 53 off just 33 balls. Oliver Berlet replaced him playing more
sedately, until he came to be the last wicket taken. Soon after, Captain Dan Dixon called them in with the score on 178 for 8 off 48 overs.
Our opening partnership didn’t go well with Kiran Sakhamuri bowled for 2 with the score on 5
in just the 3rd over. Chudleigh’s overseas scored quickly but after hitting a 6 and a 4 in
consecutive balls he was back in the pavilion - Aun Ali took 3 wickets in 5 balls over two
separate overs. Dumplings were struggling at 43 for 4 but Jim Keates stuck around until he was bowled with the score on 60. A 53 run partnership between Teriq Worrell and
Shreyansh Ghosh followed, broken when Worrell fell LBW with the score on 113. This heralded another collapse and the innings closed on 121.
Thanks to Ian Hayter for raising the side, Peter Langford for scoring on his own, and umpire
Mark Williams for travelling up from London.
