Devon Dumplings v Exeter
DD 169 ao Exeter 175-5 won by 5 wickets
Jeffrey Stanyer Memorial Game
This fixture against Exeter cricket club was the occasion for both clubs to celebrate the life and
huge contributions of Jeffrey Stanyer to both clubs over so many years.
Jeffrey sadly died last year, having played for the Dumplings for five decades and becoming the Club’s leading wicket taker. His contribution to Cricket was immense both in terms of
playing and in Committee and match-managing roles. He provided opportunities for many young
players to experience Dumplings cricket and brought on a generation of Exeter’s youth
players in the 3rd XI. For further information about Jeff’s contributions, please look on the
Dumplings website.
We were fortunate with the weather for this game after rain earlier in the week.
There was some cloud cover but no threat of rain. The Dumplings batted first and made a
positive start with Jeremy Tojy and Bradley Causey. Aashay Dube then struck twice to make
the score 25-2. Wickets fell at regular intervals including three for Adam Fradgley on the
way to 84-6. Prince Joseph joined Kiran Kumar, adding 32 runs before three more quick
wickets left the Dumplings struggling on 120-9. Jon Tipper showed his experience
in an impressively long 16 over spell, taking three wickets. A tenth wicket partnership of 49
between Joe Poustie and Dominic Tuohey took the score to 169 all out in the 45th over,
which was still a few below par.
A longer than usual tea break then followed with contributions from Jeff’s family, work colleagues at the university, and representatives from the Dumplings and Exeter CC. It was great to see so
many people there to show their appreciation of Jeff. Thank you to the Squash club for
providing an excellent tea and to Bruce Coleman and Wendy Hardy for co-ordinating it all.
The Dumplings’ opening bowlers (Prince Joseph and Felix Joseph – unrelated) made
life difficult for Exeter, and at 19-3, the game was well poised. It was great to see Bernie Wilson
make a return from retirement to bowl some of his famous spin and take one more wicket. Billy
Buckingham also produced an impressive spell of spin bowling. After promising contributions
from some of the younger players on both sides (Alex Tipper, Jasper Bubb, Joe Poustie and
Laura Cardoso) the score reached 117-5. Sean Langford (71*) showed his class after
returning from injury and was joined at the crease by Aashay Dube (43*). Their 50
partnership saw Exeter to victory in the 41st over.
Thank you to everyone who made this such a great occasion and a chance to remember Jeff
properly. There can be few who have contributed as much to cricket in Devon and he is greatly missed.
