Devon Dumplings v Somerset Stragglers

Wednesday 05 June 2024 at Shobrooke Park

D.D: 248/5 (35.2 overs) beat Somerset Stragglers: 246/6 (40 overs) by 5 Wickets

We had a great day at Shobrooke Park yesterday on a good wicket and outfield with bright sun but a stiff and occasionally chilly wind. Everybody had fun and experienced a cricket match as it should be played, with amusement and respect.
Devon Dumplings: 248/5 (35.2 overs) beat Somerset Stragglers: 246/6 (40 overs) by 5 Wickets
Bernie Wilson as temporary skipper - Richard Tidball was delayed- won the toss for Dumplings Despite having only 9 to field Bernie elected to bowl first, opening with Aashay Dube (30/1) and Jonty Brett, kindly assisted by a substitute from Stragglers.
Williams (27) and Osborne (10) took the opening partnership to 43 before Osborne fell to Dube.
At 83/3 Ali Hamid (67) was joined by Peter Matravers (78) in an excellent partnership of 102 including 9 sixes between them. It was wonderful to see Bernie Wilson ( 42/ 2) and Richard Tidball bowl in tandem with runs minimised by excellent out fielding from Jack James and other younger players patrolling the outfield! Other wicket takers - 1 each - were Jake Pascoe and Musa Twala. Stragglers came in to tea with a healthy looking total of 246/6.
Thanks to Judy Jolliffe and Wendy Hardy for producing an excellent Devon cricket tea - not a Cornish scone in sight! I must also thank Ros Wilson for her contribution of Lemon Drizzle cake – one of my personal favourites.
Dumplings reply got off to a rocky start with 2 out for 12 before opener Jake Pascoe (51) was joined by Shreyansh Ghosh (120) in a partnership of 131. Lovely batting by both with wonderful crisp sixes and beautifully subtle late cuts, reverse switch hits and good cover drives. A delight to watch. Pascoe fell to a good catch by Matravers to bring in Aryan Lakra (29) for a rapid partnership of 51 before the match was brought to a finish after Matravers took another good one off Ghosh. Musa Twala (26*) and Jonty Brett (4*) knocked off the 24 needed to achieve the win.

Thank you also to the Umpires, Don Fathers and Derek Hicks, Scorers, Sheila Harding and Derek Hardy and Shobrooke’s Groundsman Pete Turner for setting up the ground so well.

The Trophy stays with Dumplings for a second year!
