Devon Dumplings v Blundell's School

Wednesday 30 April 2025 at The School

Devon Dumplings 276 for 4 (40 overs) Blundell’s School 142 (25 overs) DD won by 134 runs.

Our 2025 season kicked off with a win over Blundell’s – and it’s been a few years since we
have done that.
In glorious sunshine, we won the toss and batting first was what is commonly called a No-
brainer. With six opening bats in the team, someone was going to have to miss out but Bradley
Causey and Dylan Penberthy-Hutchings (P-H) made the most of the opportunity, with an opening
stand of 103 in 15 overs before Causey was caught for 34.
P-H  and Harry Everett continued to score freely until Everett was short of his ground at the bowler’s end when an off drive was deflected by the bowler onto the stumps. The score was 138-2 at drinks and a solid platform.
P-H passed his 50 and was motoring towards a ton  until caught for a fine 83 from just
53 balls. That brought together two Blundells’ teachers – Liam Lewis and Rob Holman –
whose partnership of 46 took just seven overs. Liam was bowled for 38, but that brought in Felix
Joseph who was clearly in the mood to find the middle of his bat, crashing the bowling around
as 77 were scored off the last 10 overs, 55 by him off just 29 balls. Holman finished on 29* in the
total of 276-4.
After a cracking tea, Blundell’s got off to a bit of a flier (mostly extras) until Dumplings took a
couple of wickets, one each for John Baglivi and Joe Hancock. But this brought together
Thomas Holley and Alex Karseras who gave us a fright by taking the score to 91 in the 15th over
until Himanshu Aligh found Karseras’ outside edge. After that wickets fell regularly with
Australian Xavier Warmbrunn picking up 3-10 on debut with his off-breaks. He’ll enjoy his
season at Shobrooke I’m sure. Himanshu picked up another and Harry Everett mopped up the
last two to leave Dumplings winners by a very comfortable 134 runs.
Pick of the Blundell’s bats was Thomas Holley – unluckily run out for 52 as his firmly hit
cover drive hit Liam Lewis on the knee and rebounded to Xavier who threw the stumps down
before anyone realized what was going on!
Our umpire for the day was Sharon Grigg, making her Dumplings debut, and scorer was Lynne
Whitfield – my thanks to both.
